Why regular pumping matters

Grease traps slow down kitchen wastewater so fats, oils, and grease can float and solids can settle before water reaches the sewer. As a trap fills, it stops working: grease passes into the sewer, drains back up, and odors build. A common industry rule of thumb is to pump before grease and solids take up about 25% of the trap's depth.

Local sewer authorities also set cleaning requirements. For example, the Harrison County Utility Authority's grease trap regulation treats 90 days as the key cleaning interval for permitted grease generators. See the FAQ for details and sources.
